Talk Excerpt 222. Swamiji emphasises ahimsa above all else.

From Mother Radha’s notes, written at Swamiji’s feet.
Non-violence [ahimsa] requires the greatest strength and the greatest love. Anger is lust. The kingdom of God’s law is love and sacrifice. Jesus Christ and others were full of love and they sacrificed their lives.
Spiritual aspirants must be open to knowledge, not to ignorance. As Master [Sri Ramakrishna] said, ‘Hiss but do not bite.’ True ahimsa is the highest ideal, we must go step by step.
The Upanishads [ancient Hindu scriptures] say, ‘When a man sees himself in all and all in the Self, he hates none.’ Be extremely careful with others in the beginning – do not be too soft and yielding.
Adopt the attitude of non-co-operation.
Practise non-violence within, first. Make the heart a cremation ground of all attachment. This burning is spiritual life.
God is God only when He is God in all aspects – creator, preserver, destroyer.
You do not need the scriptures to be a devotee. But read the scriptures so that you may live the life and discover the Truth.
Think of the Atman. That is what we want to do. And do japa and meditation.
But we are not doing it, we are immature. We must be mature, then we will think of the Atman. The more you think of God, the more saintly you will become.
