Talks Excerpt 269. Swamiji says there is no free will.

From Mother Radha’s notes, written at Swamiji’s feet.
Think like this: ‘The Guru is the pilot of my plane.’ Surrender to him and let him do the flying.
In the silence I will know myself.
God acts, ego reacts. Live every second as it comes, then there is no tension.
Strength to serve all comes from God. So serve with love, and friendliness, and never hurt.
In meditation go with the tide. When the tide is high, go, go, go.
Think, ‘This is God’s house, God’s car, God’s family. I am only the witness.’
The gunas [three pairs of opposites] do all the actions, there is no free will. Lord Krishna says, ‘To overcome the gunas take refuge in me.’
In a [ritual worship] ceremony the kalsa represents God. Each one has a deity seated in his heart, the kalsa [brass vessel with water and holding a coconut] represents that deity to you. The druva grass is knowledge, the wealth of knowledge, health and so on. Thus we are asking God to give us all these things. Just as he looks after the grass, he will care for us. May we be at His feet. And just as grass finds itself there, let us be so humble.
Why does the deity not show itself to us? Because we do not call properly. Think how Sri Ramakrishna called Mother Kali, how St Francis called Christ. Sri Ramakrishna called, ‘I want to hear your voice, [Divine] Ma, I want to see you, Ma, with my eyes open. Let me sing your glories and stories, Ma.’
