We forget that nature is a wonderful book-keeper. Nature never makes a mistake. Our ordinary bookkeeper makes a mistake. God's law never makes a mistake. Never.
They say, 'that man is so good, but look at how he's suffering'. But how do you know what he's done in a past birth? You can only see on the surface, but not inside.
[Devotee]: Swamiji, some people say that you can get moksha [liberation] by getting away from life, renouncing life completely, meditating, sitting in a cave and so on. Do you think it's possible?
Swamiji: Yes, yes – the scripture says. Let's put it this way. If the whole day I'm sitting in a room. I'll only be thinking about what's in that room. For years, if I sat like that I'll be confining myself only to the room and me. But if I take a walk outside, you know how many things I see? What will happen now? If I saw a radio, I'll want to possess a radio. If I saw a motor car, I would like to possess it. Thus the mind will start multiplying, right?
Some of these Rishis [Sage-Seer Saints] they did not know that there is an aeroplane, so they never had a desire for an aeroplane ride. So you see how good it was – it was 'closed in' and they gave the mind to God. So if you are in the cave like that, sincerely if you start negating [repeating neti, neti – not this, not this] 'I don't want this, I don't want that' so naturally your mind will be going, soaring higher and higher, quicker. But if you are in a group, the chances are that your mind can get pulled many a place – and it's going to take longer – which is true.
