One asks the question, ‘Are we evolving from lower things to higher things, or from higher things to lower things, somehow?’ Which is it? It’s Evolution, when you talk about it. The Hindus have a theory. There was always high and there was always low. There will always be high and there will always be low. But the highest, to show us, is descent – He [the Divine] comes down.

Kapila was an Avatara [Incarnation] – he was a guru to his own Mother. He incarnated. He came down. He descended, so man can ascend. From that point of view – it’s the highest. To play is lila. That’s one of His lilas. To become a guru, and the other side of his Lila is to become a student. And he finds a great pleasure within himself, to reach apparently without ultimately, culminating in Itself.

We are not only evolving from down and going up, [Swamiji chuckles] but there is this, from up coming down. Evolution and then involution. And he is the guru who knowingly comes down. And he is a jiva [individual transmigrating soul] who unknowingly comes here. Because the guru came down knowingly, therefore he knows that path back – upwards. So he takes us up.

Christ came from top. He was not a low man that went up. Swamiji to a devotee: You get it my girl? So, Darwin’s theory to a certain extent we accept. One aspect of it. But not all. We have evolution, but we’ve also got involution.
