Talks Excerpt 640. Swamiji explains how a tamasic bhakta can force God to reveal Himself.

From Mother Radha’s recordings of Swamiji.
Girish [Chandra Ghosh] openly declared that Sri Ramakrishna is God. Girish said, ‘Right before our eyes, I have been transformed. Can’t you see that? Who else can do that? Can an ordinary man transform me, of all people?’
Girish was a natural bhakta. He was a bhakta of the tamasic type. Once he visited Sri Ramakrishna while drunk (he was wobbling about). He demanded of Master: ‘Tell me who you are. Tell me you are God.’ Sri Ramakrishna said, ‘I am not a God.’ But Girish wanted to know the truth. Then Sri Ramakrishna said, ‘All right if you say I am God, I am God.’
When God does not want to reveal Himself, the tamasic bhakta makes Him reveal Himself by force. And that is called bhairava. If anyone spoke ill about Sri Ramakrishna, Girish would be very upset and tell them that they did not know about the Master.
Sri Ramakrishna is not a guru in the ordinary sense. He is the one who is called Satguru. He is the one who said, ‘Wake up Mother,’ and the man would go into samadhi. The Divine Mother in that man woke up, then and there. He was that kind of a guru.
That was the power and grace of Paramahamsa Sri Ramakrishna, the modern incarnation of God.
