Swami Shivapadananda on the love of the Guru
DAILY READINGS
Taken from Mother Radha’s
notes, written at Swamiji’s feet.
Day 353
Shiva’s body is covered with ashes and he has the moon in his hair. This
represents the renunciation of all mental images, and therefore purity. He sits
on a tiger skin, this indicates he has overcome the senses.
Offer the fruit of your sadhana [spiritual practice] to the Lord, every
day. This leads to purity of mind. Pray: ‘O Lord, if there is any fruit from
tonight’s sadhana, let me offer it at Your feet.’ We wonder why we do not make
more spiritual progress: that is why.
Half of Shiva’s body is Durga.
The Guru is always loving and compassionate. No matter how it hurts, it
is always love. If you knew his compassion and what he did to get it, you would
cry till there are no tears left. The Guru does what he does for love, how can
he hurt himself? The Guru says, ‘Wake up to the fact that this is a dream.’
Why do we stay up all night on Shivaratri? To show there are not three
states of Consciousness, there is only one. Every second you have to watch.
The gunas perform all actions. In a godly man the sense organs act,
therefore there is no attachment. As we read in the [Bhagavad] Gita, the one with true insight into the
nature of the gunas and the actions which spring from them, knows that the
gunas (as the senses) merely move among the gunas (as the objects) and does not
become entangled.
