Swami Shivapadananda on contemplation, concentration, meditation
DAILY READINGS
Taken from Mother Radha’s
notes, written at Swamiji’s feet.
Day 354
Devotee: When you go inside [in contemplation, concentration or
meditation], isn’t it all imagination, the same as outside?
Swamiji: No, because when you go inside, you know, and you know you
know.
Believe every word the Guru says, no matter what you think.
Worship the Lord with your whole being. See yourself in all you offer;
and what you offer is your [higher] Self.
Meditate in the heart – see a candle – become one with it. Then open
your eyes and see God in all.
Do not rely on others, otherwise you will want others to do your
meditation for you.
Devotee: Why are we divided inside?
Swamiji: It is a habit from long ago, but one day we will be One inside.
Now there is the observer and the observed inside.
There are various ways to realise God. One is to repeat God’s name with
the vision of Him deep inside your heart. Another is to repeat, ‘I am not the
body, not the mind, I am pure Spirit.’
Soham [the Sanskrit word, means]: ‘I am He, I am He, I am He.’
Eventually you must become ‘He’, you must become It. Look beyond the mantra as
you say it, there is nothing. Repeat the mantra, and say, ‘I am nothing, Thou art all.’ Think like
that. Be humble. Kill the ego ruthlessly, otherwise realisation is not
possible.
