Talks Excerpt 353. Swamiji says: The enlightened person stays detached from actions.

From Mother Radha’s notes, written at Swamiji’s feet.
Shiva’s body is covered with ashes and he has the moon on his hair. This represents the renunciation of all mental images, and therefore indicates purity.
Shiva sits on a tiger skin; this indicates that he has overcome the senses.
Offer the fruit of your sadhana to the Lord, every day. This leads to purity of mind. Pray: ‘O Lord, if there is any fruit from tonight’s sadhana, let me offer it at Your feet.’
We wonder why we do not make more spiritual progress? It is because we have not surrendered the fruit of our sadhana to God.
Half of Shiva’s body is Ma Durga.
The Guru is always loving and compassionate. No matter how it hurts, it is always love. If you knew his compassion and what he did to get it, you would cry till there are no tears left. The Guru does what he does for love. How can he hurt himself? The Guru says, ‘Wake up to the fact that this world is a dream.’
Why do we stay up all night during Maha Shivaratri? To rise above the three states of Consciousness [waking, dreaming and deep sleep], and realise that there is only One, and that is, God conscious state. Every second you have to watch; be alert and awake!
The gunas [pairs of opposites] perform all actions.
As explained in the Bhagavad Gita Ch 3. vs 28, ‘O mighty-armed Arjun, illumined persons distinguish the soul as distinct from guṇas and karmas [actions]. They perceive that it is only the guṇas (in the shape of the senses, mind, and others) that move among the guṇas (in the shape of the objects of perception), and thus they do not get entangled in them.
As a result, the enlightened person stays detached from actions and does not become entangled in them, understanding that it’s nature’s qualities that are acting. This means that, one who knows that God is the doer (and not he or she), is free and not bound or attached.
A godly man knows that the sense organs act, therefore there is no attachment (he is not attached).
