Swamiji advises on Japa and rules for renunciates. Talk Excerpt 182.

From Mother Radha’s notes, written at Swamiji’s feet.
If I meditate on One, it is jnana – knowledge. If I meditate on two – it is bhakti [devotion].
If I meditate on red, I become rajasic. If I meditate on white, I become sattvic – there are different results.
If there is the sense of something wrong, one must look at oneself.
[Advice for the Renunciates – brahmacharis, monks, nuns.]
If you do 15,000 or 20,000 repetitions of the mantra a day, it will change the vibration of your mind; thus the vibration of your body becomes pure, and you will experience a little spirituality. With every breath you must repeat Pranava, Om, otherwise you are not a sannyasi in reality.
If you lead a moderate life, you will have unflinching strength like a householder. He sleeps, he is fully worldly, he does sadhana [spiritual practise]; yet he has a wife, mother, child; and he still has the power of the ever-rising sun to go to work for 8 or 12 hours. Then he comes home with that strength and love to give to the family at home. A householder is great. Part of his strength and money he gives to charity, to his surroundings, to his friends. I prostrate to the householders again and again. [Site admin comment: Swamiji said to me one day, ‘In this birth, I have come for the householders.’]
A brahmachari should not get tired, he should have three times the strength of the householder. He must give and give and never get tired – but he must live a completely sense-controlled life, saving the vital fluid [semen] – not even in dream must he lose it. This becomes ojas, spiritual energy, which gives you concentration par excellence – because it reveals God to you. It leads you towards God and it makes the mind of those who do wrong, go to the right path.
If the brahmacharis do not find it so, then they are sick – or they are cheating in spiritual life. This is a mirror.
